Cosplay Rant!

*THIS RANT IS ABOUT COSPLAY AND RACISM! DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU!*

Okay, so this has been bugging me for an extremely long time, so I decided to write a post about it. I hate to say it, but the cosplay community is subject to racism as much as any other community (and that in itself pisses me off to no end, but that's another story for another day). Now, I just want to say that in my opinion, it doesn't matter what color your skin is, cosplay whoever you want! If you want to cosplay a white character, go for it! If you want to be a character who happens to be black, go for it! If they're green, or blue, or purple...I think you get the point I'm trying to make. If you want to cosplay any character, do it. If anyone bashes on you because 'your skin tone makes your cosplay inaccurate', ignore them!

All of that aside, I also want to point out that racism isn't just targeted towards one race; it affects everyone. Here's an example:

A black girl wants to cosplay as Sailor Venus (a character who is typically white), while racist cosplayers will insult and bash on her for cosplaying 'outside of her skin tone/race', the rest of the community is cheering her on and telling her that it doesn't matter if she's black or white; she can cosplay whoever she wants.

This is a photo I found on Pinterest. And look at her, she is totally bad-ass looking and is totally rocking her cosplay!

But, (and yes there's always a 'but') the same can (and does) happen in reverse.

A white girl wants to cosplay Storm from the X-Men series, or even Moana from Disney's new film with the same name (who are both black characters-- well Moana is Polynesian, but you get the point; she's not really in a white person's 'skin tone'), will get as much hate as a black person who wants to cosplay as a white character.

I mean, look at this: she looks totally bad-ass! I don't see why she should get any hate whatsoever; her cosplay looks incredible and she seems to be having fun.

Personally, I don't see why we can't just all have fun cosplaying characters we love and admire or feel a connection with.

Personal example: I'm super-white (I'm the palest person in my family) (see image below for reference.)
I'm so pale, my own parents even said I look 'sickly pale' (I don't get much sun to be honest)

And I, like several people all over the world, watched and loved Disney's "Moana".

Like several other people all over the world who have seen this movie, I felt a real connection with the main heroine; Moana.

Now, I won't bore you with why or how I feel like I can relate to Moana and all that stuff, but I will tell you this: even if I'm 'sickly pale' as my oh-so-loving parents were so willing to announce to me, I will probably end up cosplaying her. I mean, why shouldn't I? Because I'm not Polynesian? Because I'm as white as they come? Because I'm an American/Canadian who has Irish, Polish, and a bunch of other different heritages in my blood? That's utterly ridiculous! So long as you don't try to 'color match' your skin (as in try to make your skin darker to match a character's skin-tone or vise-versa if people even do that?), I don't see why you shouldn't cosplay whoever you want.

I mean, we can cosplay as green or purple or blue characters, but everyone loses their minds when we cosplay as a character with a 'natural' skin-tone that doesn't match ours? Is anyone else seeing just how ridiculous this whole ordeal is?

Cosplay is about having fun being a character you love, regardless of their skin-tone. If you don't believe that, then maybe you should just leave the cosplay community.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow, it felt incredibly good to let that out. Anyway, my next post shouldn't be as serious (and hopefully won't be a rant!) and I hope you still enjoyed this and if you disagree, that's on you, but don't ruin the cosplay community for everyone else who loves it.

Until next time guys!

I'M NOT DEAD!!! *update*

Hey all!

So, this post is just to let you guys know that I'm not dead; I just haven't updated in a while, and for that I'm really sorry! In my defence, I've been super busy.

Let's see, where to start?
Well, I just recently got accepted to university for early admission and I just recently got my learner's permit (after the fourth attempt at the damn test!), so that's kept me kind of busy. I've also been trying to work on my cosplays for a while now; (I've been mostly procrastinating though!) I'm working on a Hiro Hamada cosplay (from Disney's Big Hero 6)

and I want to make a 'Sci-twi' cosplay (From Friendship Games), but more on that later.

Basically, I just wanted to let you guys know that I am not dead, and I will try to make more posts from here on out (when I can at least!)

I can't guarantee that I am going to be able to update regularly, considering I am a senior and I have a lot of assignments and such that will be coming up in the near future...but I'll worry about those when they come nearer!

Anyway, that's all I have to say, so until next time guys!

Cosplaying with an insulin pump

Hey guys!
So, as I mentioned in my last post, I want to talk about cosplaying with an insulin pump. Now as you may or may not know, I am a type 1 (or juvenile) diabetic. Meaning I have to take insulin. I used to be on the 'pen needles' like the one below;
Actually, I had that exact one when I was first diagnosed when I was 7 years old. Now, I have an insulin pump:
This is my pump. It usually has a really ugly green silicone case on it, but wanted to show you what it actually looked like.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand; I've only cosplayed maybe once or twice, and each time I had a different placement for my pump; when I wore that Rainbow Dash dress to a convention last summer, it was hidden away under the dress (it was actually in my bra tbh) and when I did my Princess Luna Cosplay for Halloween; it was on my waist-per usual.
It's not that I am ashamed or embarrassed about my pump, it's just sometimes it doesn't-erm- look good with the Cosplay I'm using. In example, my Sailor Venus Cosplay:
You can't see an insulin pump in that photo can you?! That's because I took it off so I could take the pic. With this particular Cosplay, there is no place I can currently place my pump with this on that doesn't look...weird or as if it doesn't belong. But, I have nothing to fear seeing as I can get something so I can hook up my pump to my thigh so that the Cosplay still looks good and you don't feel weird with the pump. There are always ways to interpret the pump into the cosplay as well, though sometimes that may not always be the case like with Sailor Venus. Some cosplays it might be really easy to just leave it on your waist and it'll look fine, meanwhile some of them might not; just be a little creative! My only advice to anyone out there who's looking for advice on how to Cosplay with an insulin pump is the following; find a way to strap it somewhere hidden or find a creative way to interpret the pump into the cosplay.
Well, that's really all I have to say for the time being. Tune in next time for...huh...I'm not exatly sure what I will be talking about next time, but come check it out anyway!

Thrift Store Finds & Cosplay progress

Hey there guys!

So this week it's March break for us in New-Brunswick, so Tuesday and yesterday I spent the day with my aunt and we went thrift shopping. I found a bunch of cosplay pieces and books within those two days:
I got these books:
- The Lord of the Rings trilogy
- The Hobbit
- Vittorio the Vampire (by Anne Rice)
- Pandora (by Anne Rice)
- Romeo and Juliet
- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland/ Through the Looking-Glass
- City of Ashes (from The Mortal Instruments series)

As you can probably tell by the title of the post, today I will be talking about my progress on my cosplays as well. Though I didn't mention it before, I am currently working on three cosplays:

                                                         Sailor Venus from Sailor Moon

Now, for Sailor Venus; I had bought the outfit from a vendor at Animaritme last summer-and it's been hanging in my closet ever since; waiting patiently for me to get a wig and shoes to complete the cosplay-
11th Doctor from Doctor Who &

Ahh! My glorious Doctor! So far, I found a blazer, a shirt & his red suspenders. All I am missing now is a red bow tie. I've found a pair of slacks that are up for debate; so I'll just have to wait and see.

Princess Cadence from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

I've had candybutt's wig since June 2014, and I finally found myself a dress for her! Though I'm not sure if I'll use the wig or not; I might buy another one that looks better. Besides my little wig issue all I am missing is a pair of shoes and a set of ears, wings and a horn.

So yeah, that's all for now, guys. Keep an eye out for my next post about cosplaying with an insulin pump. It's a topic that is rather important to me because I am a pump user myself, and I've been trying to figure out where to hook it without it looking too strange.
This is AbiTheOtakuGirl making an exit and MandoPony is going to play me out!
*Seriously guys, MandoPony & AcousticBrony's song 'Loyalty' is amazing! Go and listen to this wonderful song right now! I mean it; go listen to it THIS INSTANT!*

Animaritme 2014

Hey guys!
So, today I'm going to talk about the anime convention I went to this last summer; Animaritime 2014. I wanted to write this post like...seven months ago, but things got in the way and I just forgot about it.
I had a lot of fun during that weekend; I even met a few bronies that I actually still keep in touch with today. I even dressed as Rainbow Dash during the convention. So, if ever any of you guys are in the maritimes in late June; you should totally try to make it to Animaritime! Here are some pictures that I took during that weekend.
This is what I was wearing Saturday and Sunday during the Con :D

Like I said, met a lot of bronies during that weekend, and I couldn't help taking pictures of them, so sorry for the lack of non-pony related cosplay pictures. Anyway, that's all for now guys, so until next time!

My Cosplay came in!!!

Hey guys!
I don't know if I told you guys or not, but I ordered an Organization XIII Cosplay a few weeks ago and it just came in Friday night!! I am so happy and quite satisfied. I ordered it from HelloCosplay. Now I can't wait to get onto styling my wig and making the lexicon for my Zexion Cosplay for when I go to Animaritime this summer!!
Anyways, here are some pics of the Cosplay itself:

Anyways, that's all I really had to say so this is AbiTheOtakuGirl making an exit!!
